Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Policy
Léa Morris Postnatal Doula
1. Our commitment
I am committed to providing a welcoming, respectful and inclusive service to every family I support.
Every family is unique, and I recognise that people have different backgrounds, identities, experiences, beliefs, circumstances and ways of approaching parenthood. I aim to create a space where parents and their families feel listened to, respected and able to be themselves without judgement.
I will not unlawfully discriminate against anyone accessing my services and will treat every family with dignity, kindness and fairness.
2. Who I welcome
My services are open to families regardless of:
-
Race, ethnicity or cultural background
-
Nationality or immigration status
-
Religion or belief
-
Disability, health condition or additional needs
-
Sexual orientation
-
Gender identity or gender expression
-
Relationship or marital status
-
Family structure or who makes up a family
-
Socioeconomic background
-
Feeding choices, including breastfeeding, combination feeding or formula feeding
-
Birth choices and experiences
-
Parenting choices
I welcome different family structures, including single parents, co-parents, same-sex couples, adoptive families, blended families and other family arrangements.
3. Respecting individual choices
My role is to support parents rather than to judge or tell them how they should parent.
I will respect each family’s individual choices, values and circumstances, provided that doing so does not conflict with my professional responsibilities or the safety and wellbeing of the parent or baby.
Where appropriate, I will provide evidence-based information and signposting so that parents can make informed decisions that feel right for their family.
I recognise that families may have different experiences and needs, and I will avoid making assumptions about someone’s circumstances, identity, beliefs or choices.
4. Creating an inclusive service
I will aim to make my service accessible and welcoming by:
-
Using respectful and inclusive language
-
Listening to each family’s individual needs and preferences
-
Avoiding assumptions about gender, relationships, family roles or feeding choices
-
Making reasonable adjustments where possible for parents with disabilities or additional needs
-
Being mindful of cultural and religious practices
-
Respecting different communication styles and preferences
-
Signposting to appropriate specialist services where a family’s needs fall outside my role or expertise
I will continue to reflect on my own practice and seek opportunities to develop my understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion.
5. Respectful relationships
I expect communication between myself and the families I support to remain respectful and professional.
Discrimination, harassment, bullying or abusive behaviour towards me, another family member or another person involved in the family’s care will not be accepted.
If concerns arise, I will seek to address them calmly and professionally, and may end or decline a professional relationship where necessary to protect the safety and wellbeing of those involved.
6. Confidentiality and dignity
All families will be treated with respect and their personal information handled appropriately and confidentially in accordance with my confidentiality and data protection procedures.
I will respect each family’s privacy, dignity and right to make their own informed choices.
7. Review
This policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure that it continues to reflect my values, professional responsibilities and good practice.
